Andreas Scholz
'You never show reality, you only show its manipulated image.'
Michael Haneke
I primarily sculpt and I start from material. I feel that I have found my way to make my mark in the material. Therefore, much of my work continues to explore what the medium allows. First, I build models from paper, wood, plaster and found objects. Next, I manipulate the models by cutting, adding, taking away, hacking, digging, scratching and sanding. I find this process liberating as I gain valuable insights into previously unfamiliar techniques. Also, I begin to understand how meaning is produced and who uses it. Finally, I carefully cast the models in concrete and wax often combining short-lived materials including pharmaceutical drugs and sand. In works like Untitled (door) 2014 and Untitled (ear) 2014, I encourage materials to fulfil their full potential either by enhancement of their inherent qualities such as white plaster used for medical dressing or by mimicking human skin with flesh coloured wax. Untitled (feet) 2014 draws parallels between the softness of candle wax against the brutality of sand grey concrete.
Artist Biography
Born to an Irish mother and a German father in Wiesbaden (DE), Aindreas Scholz grew up with Erzählungen (German: stories) in a bilingual family home. Oral stories of war atrocities, miraculous escapes and personal hardships were often improvised and embellished by his grandparents. Scholz went on to study photography in Dublin (IE), developing a keen interest in visual narratives. After working for a number of years as a photolab assistant, Scholz moved to London (UK) in pursuit of further studies. Working in three dimensions, his studies question witness accounts, narrative point of view and characters leading to souvenir sculptures.
